Musings from a Ragamuffin

"Christianity is not a series of truths in the plural, but rather a truth spelled with a capital 'T'. Truth about total reality, not just about religious things. Biblical Christianity is Truth concerning total reality - and the intellectual hold of that Total Truth and then living in the light of that Truth." - Francis Schaeffer

Peace On Earth [MM]*

Heaven on Earth
We need it now
I'm sick of all of this
Hanging around
Sick of sorrow
Sick of pain
Sick of hearing again and again
That there's gonna be
Peace on Earth

Where I grew up
There weren't many trees
Where there was we'd tear them down
And use them on our enemies
They say that what you mock
Will surely overtake you
And you become a monster
So the monster will not break you

It's already gone to far
Who said that if you don't go hard
You won't get hurt

Jesus could you take the time
To throw a drowning man a line
Peace on Earth
Tell the ones who hear no sound
Whose sons are living in the ground
Peace on Earth
No whos or whys
No one cries like a mother cries
For peace on Earth
She never got to say goodbye
To see the colour in his eyes
Now he's in the dirt
That's peace on Earth

They're reading names out over the radio
All the folks the rest of us won't get to know
Sean and Julia, Gareth, Ann and Breda
Their lives are bigger than any big idea

Jesus can you take the time
To throw a drowning man a line
Peace on Earth
To tell the ones who hear no sound
Whose sons are living in the ground
Peace on Earth

Jesus this song you wrote
The words are sticking in my throat
Peace on Earth
Hear it every Christmas time
But hope and history won't rhyme
So what's it worth?
This peace on Earth

Peace on Earth
Peace on Earth
Peace on Earth

- U2, All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000)

Hopefully without sounding too sacrilegious, Bono is like a modern day Psalter when it comes to lyrics - nobody in the past 15-20 years has written them better. Seeing as Bono likes to call King David the first Blues Artist due to some of the psalms that he wrote, I see a connection to both of their words. I think that there are some parallels between the both David and Bono. I'm not saying that Bono is inspired or that his lyrics and songs are authoritative, but he touches on the same emotions and feelings as David did and he expresses them in a similarly unique way that conveys that strong emotive quality to it.

Shawn - I agree. U2, and more specifically Bono, has managed to write songs consistently pointing to the desire for man to connect with God. You definately get idea of where his heart is - not only from his lyrics - but in his desire to help relieve the suffering of so many throughout the world. Another one of my favs is Yahweh - from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb:

Take these shoes
Click clacking down some dead end street
Take these shoes
And make them fit
Take this shirt
Polyester white trash made in nowhere
Take this shirt
And make it clean, clean
Take this soul
Stranded in some skin and bones
Take this soul
And make it sing

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still I’m waiting for the dawn

Take these hands
Teach them what to carry
Take these hands
Don’t make a fist
Take this mouth
So quick to criticise
Take this mouth
Give it a kiss

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahewh, Yahweh
Still I’m waiting for the dawn

Still waiting for the dawn, the sun is coming up
The sun is coming up on the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, tell me now
Why the dark before the dawn?

Take this city
A city should be shining on a hill
Take this city
If it be your will
What no man can own, no man can take
Take this heart
Take this heart
Take this heart
And make it break

What a great song. I remember when Davina and I saw them in concert and they ended the show with this song - it was crazy, each member left the stage one person at a time while the entire crowd was singing "Yahweh". It seemed like it lasted for 2 or 3 minutes after they had left - no music, just everyone singing "Yahweh" over and over.

During the concert Bono broke out the Psalms and was reading some passages out of it - that was pretty cool too. U2 is probably #2 on my all-time favorites list right behind the Beatles. They are really good.

Thanks for posting the words to those U2 songs. I never thought about it before, but Bono's songs do remind me of the psalms. What a nice parallel.

BTW Shawn, Happy Birthday. Best Wishes to you!
